Wrapping up the Explorers Unit

I learned that explorers wanted to find land, spices, gold, and treasure . Technology helped me because it helped me to learn more about Ponce de Leon and his life. My favorite part was when we were working together on the boats and making every thing because we made all of the stuff on our own.

Updated Videos & Pictures from Unit 2 Project: Living Museum

Hi everyone:

I uploaded the videos from our Living Museum onto YouTube!  Remember, if you're a 4th grader you need to grab an adult because some of the advertisements aren't appropriate for us.

Link:  http://www.youtube.com/user/jendahl84?feature=mhee

I also created a Picasa picture album to show some of the other pictures we have.  More pictures will be added in the coming days. Here's the link:  https://picasaweb.google.com/115369793620208435380/IBUnit2LivingMuseum

My Explorer Experience

My favorite part was when I acted like I was cleaning on the ship. I was a sailor so I could've pretended to act like I was arguing with the chef about what I wanted to eat. that would've been cooler. i had very much trouble working with one of my group members. She and I never agreed on anything. I found out that working with people can be cool sometimes. I think technology helped because I couldn't have done any of this with out it. My favorite resource I used was Why Explorers Explored on our Symbaloo page.

The Living Museum

I learned that explorers use the moon so they will know where they are going and they will not get lost.Explorers  explored because there land need food and water to survive.Working with others is very important because if you work with somebody they will become your friend and then when you keep working with somebody it will become easy for you to work with other people. My favorite part was when people was pushing the start button and i had to read my script my role was Hernando Cortes and i was the captain. The people that was with me was Mayra Larry Nancy and myself.

THE WALK FOR THE HOMELESS DAY

TODAY we went to walk for the homeless and it was very fun.  Everyone was happy!  We enjoyed  the walk and we also saw a dead mole.  Right now we're doing the blog and doing our explorer project.  Today we learned how to use lattice with three digit multiplication for math.  Many other classes participated.  As we were preparing we did the moose dance!

Our student teacher Ms. Baker left for grad school class today at lunch time.  Lunch was very good today!  We had chicken, salad, beans, bread, broccoli, and milk.  Recess was great though a few of us had a hard time.  Ms. S's class was also there.

Today during inquiry two groups posted their new questions on Google documents.  Another group used our class email account to share their questions.  We know we are at the first step on our new inquiry wheel!

Tomorrow we have the Watering Rehearsal with Casey Trees!  We are all going to wear closed toed shoes that can get dirty!  We will wear uniforms this time.

Field Trip

Today we went to the Embassy of Austria. We saw a play that was for 4-6 year olds and really not for our age .We learned that it is important to keep our community clean. We learned that if Antartica melts our whole world would flood and another thing we learned is that if more trees get planted it would be better for us and animals because it gives us oxygen. We learned the our earth is our home. We learned that a lot of our earth is cold.

When we got back from school we wrote 3 sentences about what we learned there. We could either draw a picture about what we learned too. It was very fun writing sentences beacause we got to review what we learned at the field trip. It was very fun drawing the earth and telling what we mostly learned about. We learned a lot about the earth today because the play was mostly about the Earth .Well that's all for today hope you learned alot about the Earth.

Learning About Inquiry

Back trough the month during inquiry my group learned so much about Hurricanes. We learned that hurricanes are giant spiraling tropical storms that pack wind speeds over 160 miles an hour and unleash more than 2.4 trillion gallons.Hurricanes are the 2nd most destructive storms in the world! We learned that the safest place to go during is indoors. The coolest thing about this project is that I'm kind of an expert of hurricanes. I can sit next to someone and talk a hole in there ear about hurricanes. The funnest part about this project is being on Youtube talking to people about hurricanes and help them know what to do so they would be like I'm not scared all you have to do is stay indoors  away from windows and do not go outside.

Hurricanes can make people loose they're hope and make people become homeless some people are from a category 1 hurricane that's just horrible!I've learned that hurricanes make peoples house over flood and water would go higher than usual. It's pretty weird because people do not know it's coming unless they watch the news or something. The last thing I learned about hurricanes is that hurricane Irene would cost $15,000 to repair from a category 1 hurricane.  642 people died during Hurricane Andrew.

Wrapping up our first unit of inquiry

Greetings Supporters!
We've had such a busy week that we've barely had time to blog!  Wednesday Larry and James were so pressed for time they didn't even have time to finish their entry!  A few updates...

Last week we had written a persuasive letter to our principal, Ms. N, requesting permission to dress down for our tree planting volunteer work on Wednesday 10/26.  We received a reply today that informed us that we may dress down.  Below is the full text of her reply!

--
Good afternoon Indiana University!

Thank you for your persuasive letter about the need to wear “dress down” clothes for the Tree Planting Ceremony next week.
I agree that it would be good to wear appropriate clothes for tree planting, so that your uniforms do not get dirty.
You have my permission to wear tree-planting clothes on October 26th.

A few things to remember:
·         Your tree-planting clothes must be appropriate for school.
·         Bring sweaters and jackets in case it is cold outside.
·         Your shoes must still cover your entire foot for safety.
·         If you have any questions about what to wear, please check with Ms. Dahl.
·         If you are having pictures taken for Makeup Picture Day, you must be in full uniform for pictures.
·         If you lose the privilege of participating in the Tree Planting Ceremony due to behavior, you must wear your full uniform.

Have a great weekend!

Ms. N
--
Today we also completed our videotaping of our broadcasts for our Natural Disasters Unit.  Monday and Tuesday we'll be reflecting over the work we've done throughout the past several weeks.  I am working to upload the videos to my Youtube channel and will be sharing the links over the weekend if I am able to upload them successfully!  I am so very proud of my student videographers and the scholars who created an impromptu, old school version of a teleprompter (someone holding their notes above the camera)!  Most importantly, I am very excited to share our upcoming project with each of you as we get ready to start our second unit of inquriy!

Congratulations Indiana!  We are so proud of you!  Have a wonderful weekend!

Best always!

THE DAY OF THE LIFE OF TREES

Today our visitor came to tell us about planting trees.  On October 26 we are going to be planting 5 different trees called Sweetbay Magnolia, Redbud and Hornbeam.  The visitor told use how we should we treat or trees:
-no stumping,kicking, bumping
-don't break branches
-don't punch or kick.

We can collect leaves look for animals and measure our trees and keep our trees healthy.

We are doing this project with an organization called Casey Trees.  Their website is: http://www.caseytrees.org/ (You can click the link to visit it them.)

Anti-Bullying Month Survey Results

Yesterday at a staff professional development Ms. W, our school counselor, shared the results of our school-wide bullying survey.  Below is a summary of our data:

  • 34% of 4th graders report being teased at least once this school year
  • 31% of 4th graders report being bullied at school this year
  • 89% of 4th graders who reported bullying to an adult said that the adult solved the problem
  • Most bullying incidents involving 4th graders happened outside of school
  • 88% of 4th graders know the difference between teasing and bullying
  • 94% of 4th graders reported that they would tell an adult, stand up for someone, or do both if they saw someone being bullied
A few of my reflections:
  • Where is the bullying happening outside of school? (Follow up survey/questionnaire coming next week)
  • We need ways to support the 11% of students who do not feel the adult handled a time they told they were being bullied (issue bag, 1 to 1 check ins with a few kids).
  • Continue discussing teasing and bullying

Catching Up

We just realized we're really out of date on our blog!  Last week was quite busy!

We had our first principals test last Wednesday.  There was only one standard that we were not proficient on.  That standard is estimation and rounding.

Last Thursday, Ms. Dahl found out some sad news. Her Grandma had gotten a lot sicker.  We had a sub for the last half hour of the day.  On Friday, Ms. Dahl told us her Grandmother had passed away and that she would need to travel to Indiana to be with her family.

Tuesday, we had a new student join our class.  His name is Deon'dre!  He came to us from another school in Washington DC.  He likes math and science.  Outside of school he enjoys going to the playground and doing a fundraiser with his friend.  He is trying to raise money for the homeless.  He is 9 1/2 years old

Yesterday we were very good for Ms. Baker and we worked on our stories.  At the end of the day we had cookies and a dance party!  She wanted to reward us for our good behavior while Ms. Dahl was away.  We were allowed to wear orange to show support for students who are being bullied.

Today Ms. Dahl returned!  Two of our classmates are absent today.  We learned that we can more stuff with estimation than we thought before.  We know that estimation is used in our real lives. Imagine if you didn't estimate and went to the store - you might not know how much you were going to spend.  Today Ms. Baker helped us with independent reading while Ms. Dahl did Deon'dre's Fountas and Pinnell test.  Today TWO people had their desks dumped over!  It was a totally random desk inspection!

Today there is a volleyball game after school (good luck Taylor!) and the flag football game was cancelled.

The Principal's Test Story

Today we had an awesome and cool day! This the second day of Anti Bullying Month. Yesterday, Melody shared an interesting fact about bullying with the whole school on the morning announcements. She told us that 1 out of 4 kids is bullied sometime during their school years. Today, Nichelle, wants to share that we completed a bullying survey to help the adults know how much help we need to squash out bullying! Later this week we are participating in a poster making contest about anti-bullying!

Today was our second day in our new Reading Results classes. Yesterday some of us had to change to new classes. Ms. Dahl ate more rocks during her class!! Our new class is really big for those of us who stay here at Indiana University!

For lunch today we had Salisbury Steak, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables and oranges.

We completed our first Principal's Test for Math. After that we took a minute challenge test for our multiplication facts. Yesterday in math we reviewed the properties for multiplication. Some of us also worked on PEMDAS - remember to: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. Unfortunately our Touch Math class has come to an end but we'll start something new with Ms. S and Ms. M.

Ms. Dahl was able to reserve the laptop cart. We used the laptops to get on Apangea! Ms. Dahl posts a chart that shows how often we use. We are also using the laptops for our "Finding Out" session of our inquiry unit! We're working hard to answer our inquiry questions about our unit on natural disasters caused by earthquakes, hurricanes and volcanoes. Melody says, "Earthquakes can cause a lot of injuries to people."

Ms. B left early today because she has to go to her college classes. Ms. Dahl was being silly again!

Please feel free to leave us school appropriate comments.

Dress Down Day!

Today we got to dress down, however a lot of people did not get to dress down because they did not pay to dress down. Today in reading results we continued to read a book called  Dear Mr.Henshaw.  It is a really good book we are on page 93.  We are more than half way through the whole book!   For our class novel we are reading a book called Lunch Money.  In this book a little boy named Greg was punched in the face accidentally by a girl named Maura.

Later after Readers Workshop we went to recess.  Most of us managed to stay really clean today and Ms. Dahl was excited because the playground was a little muddy.  During lunch we had a pizza party from Ms. W for having 99% attendance for September.  Lunch was delicious!

Art class was pretty cool today. We had to critque our self portraits and that required us to be reflective just like we do for inquiry and other things with Ms. Dahl.

During Inquiry we split up into our teams for our projects so that we could set our norms.  It sounds like a person's name - Norm but it really means figuring out how we want our group to run.  We had to decide where are we going to meet, what are our rules, and what materials do we need to bring with us to the group meeting.

This morning we went bowing some people stayed with Ms. S.  We had alot of fun!  We went to gym  played outside.  For lunch we had cut up steak and cheese.  By the time we got back to Ms.S are class was back from bowling and I was really happy to go back to class.  After the other kids finished eating lunch we did a quick math activity and then jumped into inquiry.  We are still on the Finding Out stage of our inquiry wheel.

A Day with a birthday!!

It was Ms.Baker's birthday! She brought cupcakes in for us! We have to be really good so we can enjoy the delicious dessert.

Today we learned about fact families in math class. We made a booklet to show how much we know and how much their still is to learn. This booklet was a part of our mulitiplication and division lessons. In our HSP math book, we worked on a few problems to make sure that we are excellent mathmaticians.

After math we had inquiry. During this time we made a the wheel of inquiry where we go in a circle from wondering to finding out to sorting out to creating to presenting to reflecting. Our class looked at our blog and saw all of the great links Ms. Dahl had put up for us to find information about hurricanes, volcanoes, and earthquakes. Next we got into groups and worked on the finding out section of our inquiry wheel by reading nonfiction books.

Once inquiry is over we all will sing Happy Birthday to Ms. Baker and eat some AWESOME cupcakes! YUMMMMMM! It really was a special day!

Unit 1: Culminating Task

[We've reviewed this in class and sharing it with our supporters was homework on Monday night, however, here's a bit more information!]

As we experienced earlier this school year natural disasters occur anywhere at any time.  You’ve been hired by a major news agency and are expected to report about the unfolding events.  You will work collaboratively with colleagues to research major earthquakes, hurricanes and volcanoes that have impacted the world since 1990.  As a breaking news reporter for CNN or the Weather Channel you will be expected to create a 10 – 15 minute presentation that includes a visual representation and presentation.

You must include:
  •          Map with specific location
  •          Date of disaster
  •          Comparison to 2 other similar events – 1 domestic and 1 international
  •          3 – 5 suggestions for others who may be impacted by a similar type of natural disaster
  •          An examination of historical trends of your natural disaster and the likelihood of a similar event to happen in the same place.
  •          Within your group 1 student must take the role of (whichever is applicable)
o   a geologist  and research the causes and effects of earthquakes and volcanoes
o    a meteorologist will research the causes and effects of hurricanes.

Earthquakes, Hurricanes and Volcanoes

As you check out the different resources bring in evidence of your thoughts and exploration!  You'll have an opportunity to share during Inquiry or Morning Meeting!  Feel free to also leave us comments below or email Ms. Dahl at jdahl@friendshipschools.org!

A Dodgeball day in the gym!

Today Ms. W our art teacher was absent so we were able to go to the gym. In gym we played dodgeball and it was really fun.  The Indiana University girls beat the Cornell University girls!  They lost because they had the most people out.  Indiana University also had more players.  We had to catch the ball and whoever threw it had to sit down on the bench.  If another person got out then you could go back in the game.  If a Cornell girl got out then an Indiana girl got to go back in the game.  We had so much fun!

Later the boys had to play against the Cornell boys.  Unfortunately they only had a little while to play.  Some students had a really hard time showing how to use their gym time.  Hopefully we can play again sometime soon.

Grab your umbrellas tight

Today we  came in dry but now its a rainy rainy day.Today we took our vocabulary test.We are almost done with our fourth set of our vocabulary. We did reading results today.Because of the rain we had recess indoors today  but instead of  going in the gym we were in Mr.Bs class and played freeze dance and air guitar music for recess.

We had some weird looking sandwiches today for lunch and a banana with salad and a granola bar.
Lunch was a little crazy today. Some people clearly forgot the procedures. Hopefully we'll do better next week.
For math we went in to our groups there are 3 groups The Jackson 5,The Mathletes, and the Math Geniuses .In those groups we did different activities in our groups. We didn't have social studies or science because that would take up our fun Friday time .
Stay safe and dry.Feel free to leave school appropriate comments

THE CRAZY FUN SOME WHAT BAD DAY

Today it was a very crazy day. We learned how to round and on addition and subtraction. We also met in math groups. Our groups are named:  Mathletes, Jackson 5, and Math Geniuses.  Breakfast was LATE!  Today it was so crazy that we didn't get to do morning meeting. Before we started to blog we started to do a fun project on earth and we were labeling the parts of earth like crust and the ocean!  We learned about Pangea where all the continents were pushed together.

Sorry we didn't get to blog so long. We are very busy!  Our crazy day was very crazy!

The Super Star Scholars

Today we ate cinnamon toast crunch for breakfast and it was DELICIOUS! In reading results we continue to play vocabulary board games. We also did our cause and effect paper for the play. After reading results we did our vocabulary then when we finish that we read Lunch Money. After that we read independently and we had to write a letter to Ms. Dahl and Ms. Baker about what we had read. Once our letters were finished we went to recess, lunch and art. Next was math do now and math centers. It was fun because we had a lot of stuff to do and we learned a lot about math words. Science/Inquiry was after Math. In inquiry we watched a video about the layers of the Earth. Then when we went to our seat we had to create the layers of the Earth: inner core, outer core, mantle, and the crust. We then labeled the areas and had to make a diagram.Once we were finished it was the end of the day!

The Crazy Busy Day!

The past three days have been INCREDIBLY busy!

I am sorry we haven't blogged for three straight days.  We hope you try to keep up with us and we are going to try harder to keep up with you!  Feel free to leave us comments so we know who is reading our blog!

The best thing we've done in the past few days is math!  Today we reviewed addition by using Chinese take out menus and creating our pizza orders!  After all, like Ms. Dahl, sometimes you burn your pizza and have to order Chinese!

One other thing we've really enjoyed is inquiry!  We've been learning all about the continents.  The continents are: North America, South America, Europe, Antarctica, Asia, Africa and Australia!

Starting new things

Today we had many "firsts":
  • in Inquiry we had to answer the question, "Why does it matter where we are?"
  • for our math do now we had to use digits to make the largest number and explain how we knew.
  • touch math is fully up and running!
  • reading results has come back into our morning!
  • During reading results we had to keep working on the Fountas and Pinnell test!
  • Writing is coming up shortly after we do our blog post!
  • Ms. S is back!
  • During math we learned about Apangea which is a math program we can use at school and home to help us improve our math skills.
  • Today for do now (during breakfast) we had to talk to our table about what we did over the weekend and how we celebrated the good weather?
  • After slate math we had a mini lesson to help us get ready for our quiz!
We still have so much to do today and its 2:42pm! Gotta run!

Peace Day!

This morning began quite rainy but thankfully it is a sunny beautiful afternoon.  Today was also a very, very busy day!  Some of us went to the Peace Day celebration in the cafeteria because they have not been on a level 2 or higher.
Many more of us completed the Fountas and Pinnell test.  Today we were able to get through almost five tests.  We are almost finished with all of our tests!  While we were doing the F&P test we also worked on our Learner Profile books and continued practicing capitalization.

Again today in math we did place value.  Today during math we did a project about place value.  This weekend we must finish our projects if we are not already done.  Place value is hard for some of us and easier for others.  Some people were able to work on the carpet with base ten blocks while others of us worked on our projects.  Today the work that we did was hard.  The students who were not on the carpet had to start their projects.

Ms. S was back and we were able to have Touch Math class!

Today for homework we must finish our place value projects and our reading log.

A busy day

Rain rain go away! When we came in today most of us were wet from the rain!  It looks liked we had gone to a swiming pool before school, IN OUR UNIFORMS!  Some of us stepped in puddles of water and got our feet wet.  Some people remembered their umbrellas and stayed dry.

This morning we worked on vocabulary!  It was pretty hard.  Today we continued the Fountas and Pinnell assessment.  While Ms. Dahl was doing that we had to complete our capitalization worksheet.  This is proving to be quite a challenge for us!  We don't like to capitalize anything!  Today was a bit easier for some of us but harder for some of us.

UGH! Today for lunch we had this sorta meat loaf patty, it was like mystery meat.  It was GROSS!  There was wheat bread under the mystery meat.  It was drenched in gravy.  We also had pineapple.  The pineapple was delicious.  Some people were very lucky that they brought their lunch today.  Some students were even begging for parts of others lunches since the school lunch was so gross.

In math today we had to do greater than and less than.  We also had to use our slate and markers.  Our entire class represented number sentences with greater than and less than.  We had to work together.  Today some of us did not have Math Intervention because Ms. S was unavailable.

Despite the rainy day we had a good day! (Though one of us thinks it was a terrible, horrible, no good very bad day.)

Our goal for tomorrow is to have a smooth transition to art.

Today we are soggy scholars!

We began our day as soggy scholars! It is very, very rainy!  This morning we played "Electricity!" as our morning meeting activity.  For this game we had to squeeze hands and go all around the circle to where it started as fast as possible. Again today we did not have Reading Results because it was closed for the week! All of the other grades were testing.

We read two more chapters in How to Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell.  Ms. Dahl also continued working on the Fountas and Pinnell assessment. Today we worked on capitalization.  Capitalization was kinda hard to write down the capitalized letter when it was lower case. We worked on capitalization because some of us need more practice on how to start our sentences, names, specific places, and proper nouns.  Later we worked on vocabulary and we used our Wordly Wise books to practice our words in lots of different ways.

In math today we learned more about place value, digits and we played math games for indoor recess. We had to roll a dice and write our numbers on the chart! We had to create numbers that have 3 - 5 digits then we wrote the standard form, expanded form and word form in our math notebook.

Today we had a BUSY day!  As we move on with our day we are going to head into the Inquiry block and then have Writers Workshop!

Hope you all stayed dry on this very soggy Wednesday!

Getting started with our 4th grade year!

Since school started we have been reading almost every day.  This year we have a new program called Reading Results.  During results we read with students who are on our same Independent Reading level.  We read together and have reading centers.  Nichelle says her favorite center has been writing!  We use the I PICK strategy (from Daily 5) to select our Independent Reading books.

This year we're going to be starting International Baccalaureate! This year Miss Dahl's Scholars are learning about the ten learner profiles that go along with International Baccalaureate. Antonique stated that our classroom is very Caring! Our classroom also shows a second learner profile by being great Communicators and working together in groups. We are very excited to dive into our new way of learning and discovering the world of International Baccalaureate.

One of our favorite projects so far has been making our hopes and dreams stars. During this project we drew a picture of what we wanted to do when we grow up in the center of a star. On the points of the star our classroom put how we were going to achieve our overall goal. Once our stars were finished, the stars were hung up on the front of our room for everyone to see.

Miss Dahl's classroom has been learning a chant to help us get through the year. The chant goes like this:
Teacher: Who are you?!
Students: I am the greatest!!
Teacher: What do you want?!
Students: I want to learn!!
Teacher: What do you demand?!
Students: I demand that no one interferes with my learning including myself!!!
This chant helps us focus on our goals and that we are the CLASS OF 2024!!
